Tips for Maximizing Your Summer Experience

Tips for Maximizing Your Summer ExperienceTips for Maximizing Your Summer ExperienceAfter surviving the 2L interview season and deciding where you will spend your summer, you are now able to enjoy a well-earned break from thinking about summer employment. Yet even as you turn your focus back to classes, journals, and student groups, law firms are getting ready for your arrival Firm lawyers and legal recruiting teams spend hours between the end of the interview season and the start of the summer program in meetings- planning orientation, social events, and training programs. This is all to ensure that a thoughtful and well-executed program is in place for you to have a great experience. Here are our tips for making the most of what is prepared for youBe responsive. This is crucial to your success as a summer associate. It is never too early to establish good habits and make a positive impression. In the months leading up to the start of the summer program, you will receive multiple em ails from the legal recruiting team. Your replies will yield the information we need to prepare for your arrival. Accordingly, respond to those inquiries before their deadlines. Once you arrive as a summer associate, you should acknowledge receipt of and respond to lawyer emails and phone calls as promptly as possible. If you are going to be unavailable for a period of time, let the lawyers with whom you work know in advance.Show up. It sounds simple, but showing up means much mora than being physically present. When you arrive on your first day, strive to participate in the days events with a positive attitude. You will meet many new people from the moment you arrive, so you should anticipate and be open to new experiences. While you wont be able to attend every event, do avail yourself of as much as your schedule allows. This will give you the opportunity to get to know your fellow summer associates and lawyers more informally, outside the office. Associates and partners often tel l us that some of their closest friends today were former fellow summer associates. Look around and reach out to others to make the experience an enduring one.Unlock your resources. While you may initially find maneuvering around the firm to be daunting, there are many people who are more than willing to help. Legal secretaries can answer questions about submitting expenses, ordering supplies, and how to use the firms document management system. In addition, summer associates are typically paired with junior associates who were in your shoes not that long ago. They can serve as informal mentors, sharing what they wish they knew when they were summer associates. They can also answer questions about the work they do and how it is assigned, and introduce you to more senior lawyers. You may also work with a more senior lawyer who will oversee your projects during the summer and ensure you have exposure to the right mix of matters, lawyers, and practice groups. Be proactive and set up we ekly meetings to provide updates on your projects and get feedback. All of unterstellung people can enhance your summer experience, so be sure to harness their expertise to make the most of your time. And remember, your firms legal recruiting team is there to support you throughout your summer, so do not be shy about seeking them out.Network. Networking effectively is a large part of succeeding in a summer program. Take advantage of every opportunity you can to enhance your skills. Participate in trainings and attend networking and other summer program events. In addition, try to get more comfortable doing outreach to individual lawyers. Seek out alumni from your law school and lawyers who work in practice areas of interest to you, and connect with the recruiters who recruited you during the interview process so you can share your experiences.Tackle Projects Professionally. Your firm will likely provide tips on being a successful summer associate- heed all of that advice and put it into action Be proactive in setting up the initial project meeting with the assigning lawyer- dont wait for them to set it up. You want your assigning lawyers to feel confident that you understand the assignment and that you have the information you need to get it done. Take notes during meetings with assigning lawyers, and once you think you have a good grasp of the parameters of an assignment, summarize it in your own words to confirm you understand. Repeating back what you heard is important because it gives the assigning lawyer the opportunity to listen and digest what they just told you. They may then say, Yes, move forward or realize what they told you is not clear, or that they want you to head down a different path. Get clear deadlines (and respect them) and raise questions or concerns before it is too late to change course. Follow through with a cohesive work product and be confident when you report your findings, even if you cant find anything. As you work on projects over the summer, provide the lawyers with regular updates on your progress instead of waiting for them to follow up with you.Take Time for Self Care. No matter which firm you choose, you will work hard during your summer to earn an associate offer. Simultaneously, we understand that you will also be juggling summer program events and other commitments. We want to give you the tools to manage competing priorities, find balance, and succeed long-term. That means sometimes saying no to additional commitments and making sure you are getting enough sleep, exercise, and healthy food. Make your well-being a priority. We wish you the best of luck in having a great experienceThis is a sponsored blog post by Sidley Austin LLP. To see the firms full profile, click here.

3 difficult habits that get easier over time the more you do them

3 difficult habits that get easier over time the mora you do them3 difficult habits that get easier over time the more you do themHow many positive habits articles do you need to read before you starttaking action?Heres the thing about forming positive habits It is difficult. The things we know we should do, we dont - and the reason we dont is because they are challenging. They are not easy. They make us tired, or insist that we (gasp) think.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWe dont do them because, in some sense, we fear that they will be as difficult as they feel now, forever. But the thing is (and anyone who has ever pushed themselves knows this), difficult things get easier the more you do them.Even the really hard habits, the ones that constantly feel strenuous, in some sense get easier with time. And the reason is because you not only become more skilled in that area, but you a lso become more patient with yourself throughout the process. Here are 3 essential habits everyone knows they should do, but tend notto. And heres exactly how you can get through the difficult phase and make them part of your daily wissen.1. ReadingIf youre reading this right now, you are (in some sense) on the right track. One of my favorite things to ask people is, What was the last good book you read? Most people are shocked, and I know the answer before they even say it Wow, I cant remember the last book I read.Sure, we read blogs, and tweets, and long-winded Facebook posts - but reading a book is different. Reading a book takes time, and patience, and especially when dealing with fiction versus nonfiction, both categories work different parts of your brain.Reading isessential.I strive to read a book every other week. Two weeks is more than enough time to get through a roughly 300-page book. The best way I have found to create a habit of reading is to have it take the place of your smartphone and filler time social media usage.Whether that means reading on your iPhone or keeping a book in your backpack or purse, every time you have a few free minutes, open your book. When youre waiting in line at the grocery store, open your book. When you are on the train, open your book. Anywhere and everywhere you would otherwise compulsively check your mail and Facebook notifications (the majority of which are not important), open your book.Youll be amazed how quickly you move through material, and how much more stimulated your mind feels throughout the day. And, most important, reading will no longer feel like a chore. It will simply become a way to pass the time.A smarter escape, if you will.2. Waking upearlyThis is the king of habits I really should do, its just that my bed is so comfortable. If youre not a morning person, waking up early is horrible. It is not easy. It feels grueling, and youre fighting yourself all the way to the shower - and then once the hot water hits your head, you practically fall right back asleep then and there. When most people try to instill this habit into their lives, they think its all about waking up early. Its actually about something else. Its about going to bedearlier.Sleep is the constant. There are only two variables you can change You either go to bed earlier, or you wake up later. If you want to create a successful early morning routine for yourself, its much more about mastering the evening routine that comes beforeit.Slow yourself down an hour before bed.Read a book (see above) instead of browsing Instagram, so your eyes can relax. Meditate, or take a warm shower. Do activities that are intended to move you into sleep, so that you can wake up ready to go the next morning.Where people tend to go wrong is they set their alarm for 530 a.m., but still go to bed at midnight. Thats a disaster waiting to happen. And then of course, 530 rolls around, youre exhausted, you call yourself a failure, etc.Focus on the night before - and stick with it. Nobody forms a habit after three days. It takes a bit. But once you do it for two or three weeks, it becomes your normal, and suddenly waking up early isnt so difficult anymore. Its just what you do.3. ForgivenessHad to throw a curve ball in here.Forgiveness. Compassion. Understanding. Patience. The act of listening and taking time to see life through someone elses eyes For many, this is not easy. What few seem to realize is that forgiveness and humble traits of the sort are not inherent. They dont just happen. You have to practice them - no different than how you have to practice firing pucks at a hockey net to improve your wrist shot.To be forgiving or compassionate, in a way, is ahabit. As soon as you start to think of it as something that you can consciously practice, your approach to it inherently changes.Suddenly, moments, when you are frustrated or upset, become opportunities to react differently.I have witnessed many people in my life make the proc lamation that they are going to turn things around or be better listeners and then fail to keep their word for longer than a day, or an afternoon, or even an hour. And the reason is simpleHabits dont change overnight.Your personality, the way you react to situations, and the energy you bring to the moment is the way it is because thats what you practice. Every day, in everything you do, thats what you practice - so if you want to change that, you have to practice something different. But should you stick with it, and continue challenging yourself to step back, reflect, and react differently the next time, the easier it ultimately becomes - until eventually, it is simply who you are. This article originally appeared on Inc Magazine. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistak es you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

From misconceptions about their active duty job roles to a lack of understanding of the nuanced talents veterans can bring to all levels of employment, lets delve into our guide to hiring and understanding veteran candidates and the benefits they may add to any organization.Return From DutyOne of the most common misconceptions when it comes to the term veteran is that it refers to soldiers who have experienced combat. In reality, however, a veteran is anyone who has fulfilled their active duty responsibilities either at home or abroad, i n combat, or in a support role.Regardless of the individual position, however, all military members have undergone the same level of training and conditioning. This initial induction, as well as subsequent experience in an active military role, helps create dynamic and talented individuals with a range of qualifications. From culinary to logistics, veterans are uniquely qualified to step into a diverse range of service and leadership positions with their prior training and support already provided courtesy of their previous armed services experience.Unfair BiasVeterans exiting active duty are often confronted with a host of unfair biases. One of the most common is a misconception of PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder. While PTSD is a common condition facing many of our active duty service members exposed to stressful and violent experiences on the battlefront, it does leid impact a persons ability to contribute to society, maintain a successful job, or lead a team of qualified individuals. When interviewing veterans, refrain from asking about specific combat experiences such as whether they were engaged in live fire situations or whether they had to kill anyone in their role. Not only are such questions prohibited under many federal laws, but they are also a poor method for evaluating individual capabilities and performance in civilian positions. Instead of focusing on military duty, ask for situations that highlight individual traits such as leadership or decision making skills. In return, youll gain not only a quality employee but someone who is able to contribute a unique set of skills to your position based on a wide array of real-world experience.Alternative ApproachesNeed additional guidance in the interview room or beyond for potential veteran candidates? Here we lay out a few common questions and viewpoints that express unnecessary bias along with alternative queries that will help you identify transferable skills and that will help land you a qua lity candidate in the process BiasAsk these questionsMilitary personnel only do what theyre told. They dont have leadership skills and cant think on their own.Tell me about a situation when you made a decision that affected your troop. What were the results of that decision?Tell me about a time when you disagreed with your instructions. What did you do? What was the outcome?Former military personnel can be rigid in their individual thoughts and actions.Tell me about a time you contributed to a team when there were different viewpoints being shared. How did the team come to a solution, and what role did you play?Soldiers are uneducated and do not have college degrees. What kind of on the job training was provided to you in the military?Tell me what skills you learned while in the military. All veterans have PTSD, and wont be able to do their job reliably as a result.Ask specific questions related to your job in this situation. For example, will you be able to work between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.? Will you be able to travel 25% of the time? When evaluating veteran candidates, keep in mind that this unique and diverse talent swimming-pool will often have experiences and training that can benefit your individual business and return on talent investment. A commitment to excellence and discipline and the ability to adapt to the most extreme of conditions are only a few of the benefits of hiring a veteran can bring to your business. Keep an open mind and you will reap the benefits of a candidate who has undergone the most rigorous on the job training program available.

Boost Your Hiring With a Workplace Wellness Program

Boost Your Hiring With a Workplace Wellness ProgramBoost Your Hiring With a Workplace Wellness ProgramWhen you think about it, the concept of workplace wohlbefinden goes back at least as far as Henry Ford, whose automobile company started five-day, 40-hour workweeks in 1926. Over the decades to follow, companies set policies for breaks and vacations, banned smoking in offices and formed after-work sports leagues.Today, the skys the limit, with on-site fitness boot camps, take-your-dog-to-work days and rooftop joga sessions.Efforts to promote health and well-being have been shown to increase productivity and help minimize healthcare costs. But they can also do something else give your company an edge when it comes to hiring the best employees before the competition does. Seventy-three percent of workers responding to a new OfficeTeam survey said a companys wellness program influences their decision of whether to work there or not. Given todays tight hiring market, its not surprising t hat workplace wellness is getting more attention in 2019.How can companies, large and small, ensure their corporate health and wellness offerings are attractive to potential hires? Here are six suggestions to get you started.1. Wellness incentivesOffering prizes to employees who engage in healthy behavior, such as weight loss or smoking cessation, can go a long way. Encourage employees to start a lunchtime walking group or consider working with an outside vendor to put a formal program in place, such as lunchtime CrossFit or Weight Watchers.2. Access to fitness facilitiesYour company might have a lunch room, but do you have movement zones, rock-climbing walls and nap rooms? Probably not, but dont worry These are pretty unusual. Consider free or discounted gym memberships, chair massages or exercise classes for your workplace wellness initiatives.3. Ergonomic evaluations and equipmentProper ergonomics is essential in offices and are part of workplace wellness. Can chairs be adjusted for each employees height? Are computer monitors the right height, and are foot rests needed at desks? Standing desks are gaining in popularity, if youre considering cubicle makeovers for your office.4. Healthy food optionsWhat you offer in your break rooms and vending machines says a lot about your workplace wellness. Doughnuts or carrots? Soft drinks or filtered water? You may not want to regulate what your workers eat and drink, but you can encourage good nutrition by offering healthy food choices at company meetings and in office cafeterias.5. On-site vaccinations or health screeningsOn-site flu shot clinics hosted by companies for their workers offer a convenient way to make sure everyone has the opportunity to be vaccinated. Its likely these events will cut back on sick days, too. Companies also can create a culture of wellness with health screenings that might identify risks involving smoking, weight physical activity, blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure and diet.6. Stre ss management resourcesWork-related stress can take a heavy toll on individuals and companies. Some of the techniques to minimize stress you can share with your team include the followingGetting enough restStarting the day with a clear deskKeeping a daily to-do list to prioritize tasksPracticing time managementEating nutritious mealsDeveloping a good support systemEngaging in hobbies you enjoyCommunicating with your supervisor for assistanceOther resources? Music, massages, meditation and walks can do wonders.Just as job seekers are lured by competitive compensation, benefits packages and work-life balance, they are attracted by workplace wellness, too. If you make wellness part of your corporate culture, you may find a bonus for yourself, too, when its time to hire.

10 Skills and Qualities That Employers Want to See in Candidates

10 Skills and Qualities That Employers Want to See in Candidates 10 Skills and Qualities That Employers Want to See in Candidates Welcome to Recruiter QA, where we pose employment-related questions to the experts and share their answers! Have a question you̢۪d like to ask? Leave it in the comments, and you might just see it in the next installment of Recruiter QA! This Week̢۪s Question: Hiring new employees is a complex process and were not going to pretend it isnt. But, in general, what skill matters most to you when hiring? What skill hard or soft can make or break an applicants chances of landing the role? 1. Interest The most important consideration for me when hiring is the candidates interest. More than anything, you want to hire an employee who can stay motivated to grow and adapt to the position. But motivation is very difficult to judge in an interview. Interest, however, is a great indicator that a candidate will stay motivated. And interest is very easy to evaluate. Thats why I love to ask the old interview question: Do you have any questions for me? The questions they ask are a better indicator of their interest than practically any other step of the job application process. - Marc Prosser, Fit Small Business 2. Alignment With Our Core Values No matter the position, we hire the same way. We look for people who exhibit our core values people who are passionate, dependable, adaptable, helpful, resilient, and who communicate well. Your values will look different, but the importance remains the same. If you only hire people that embody the key attributes that your company values, you can̢۪t go wrong. - Miles Jennings, Recruiter.com 3. People Skills There is virtually no role in any company where a little bit of each of the following skills isnt imperative: people skills, conflict resolution, and problem solving. Without these three skills, its difficult for an employee to function as an effective part of a team. - John Jersin, Connectifier 4. The Ability to Multitask I look for the ability to multitask above all other skills, and I ask for demonstrable examples where this skill has been used to achieve success. People who are easily flustered can shift the energy in an organization and will definitely impact the dynamics of a small team. The ability to work on several tasks in a calm manner is essential to success. - Andrea Berkman Donlon, The Constant Professional 5. Emotional Intelligence Emotional intelligence (EI) includes self-management and self-awareness. It is the ability to be aware of your emotions and manage your behavior. EI also includes social competence, which is the ability to understand other peoples moods, behaviors, and motives in order to improve the quality of your relationships. If a candidate can manage themselves, stay cool under pressure, and understand how they are with others, then chances for success are high. - Jay Candelario, Candelario Insurance Advisors 6. Attitude I can̢۪t fix a bad attitude, and a bad attitude is also infectious. I was once told the when you sit across from a candidate, you should ask yourself, What is their attitude, and do I want others catching it? To uncover a candidates attitude, try to get them into a comfortable environment, not the traditional behind-the-desk interview. Go to a patio and have lunch or coffee. Put them in a relaxed environment, and you will be surprised what comes out. - Roy Barker, Moore Diversified Services 7. The Get Sh*t Done Gene I look for one thing in a manager that I call the get sh*t done gene, or the get er done gene. This is an extremely rare commodity that is practically as unobtainium as common sense. It is the difference between a manager who sits quietly at their desk waiting to be micromanaged, or who puts all of their talent into avoiding the wheel of blame, and a manager who is able to do their job which is getting sh*t done. One tests for this by giving the candidate situations and asking how they would handle them. If the answer includes the word communication, I probably have a manager on my hands. - Alan Robbins , Moose WorldWide Digital 8. Intelligence What matters the most to me when hiring is intelligence. I realize thats a quality. As a skill, it manifests as knowledge, the ability to apply that knowledge and learn more, and the ability to solve problems. When I hire a new employee, they must be smarter than I am if not in all ways, then at least in all ways related to their area of expertise. I firmly believe that if Im the smartest person in my company, then Im in trouble. - J. Colin Petersen, J I.T. Outsource 9. Will Will over skill! Will is the soft skill that aligns with a personal affective nature. It is what motivates a person to take action or not. With 20 years experience coaching small business owners and recruiting in corporate America, I know that will cannot be taught. If I find an individual that is missing some of the hard skills, I can teach them those skills. But no amount of education or training will teach someone to want to do the job and do it well. That comes from inside of them. - Lisa Baker-King , Zebecs 10. Coachability When it comes down to the final few candidates, it matters less what the skill sets are. If the candidate is unwilling to learn and be coached, then they are not a good fit for the company. If the candidate is coachable, that will tip the process in their favor. Missing skills can be taught and improved upon. In addition, a candidate that has been coached tends to have a greater loyalty to the company that has brought them up and taught them the skills that they need. The company is also more likely to promote someone who has been coached and has proven that they can grow, adapt, and succeed. - Jennifer Maffei, Virtual EA Services, LLC

4 ways to handle job search rejection with grace

4 ways to handle job search rejection with grace 4 ways to handle job search rejection with grace We’re all familiar with that period of torture after you submit a job application and are forced to wait (sigh, for what feels like ages) for any sort of response. In the end, the waiting is all worth it if you land the job of your dreams. But, if things don’t go according to plan and you’re eventually met with rejection? There’s no doubt about it- that stings. Here’s the thing:  dealing with rejection is never going to be fun. You’re never going to hope that you get turned down for something. However, it is possible to deal with that letdown in a way that presents you in the best way possible- and hopefully sets you up for even better opportunities in the future. Here’s how to handle job search rejection with grace:1. Don’t respond immediately. If you’re being rejected face-to-face (ouch), then you obviously have no choice but to respond immediately. In those circumstances- regardless of what your insides are screaming- simply thank them for the opportunity and get out of there. But, if you’ve  received a job rejection  via email,  the smartest thing you can do is take some time before replying. This gives you the time you need to cool off, get your emotions in check, and avoid firing off a heated reply that looks something like, “Thanks for wasting my time!”You can go ahead and type out a reply right now if you feel like you need to get your thoughts on paper- just don’t send it. Come back to it later when you have a clearer head so you can ensure you don’t send a note that you’ll regret.2. Start with a “thank you.”Huh? They just gave you a sucker punch to the ego? Why on earth would you thank them for that? I get that this seems counterintuitive, but hear me out.  It’s not only a professional and polite way to start your response, it’s also well-deserved.Despite the fact that  you didn’t end up with the position, that employer still sunk time and resources into your candidacy- whether it was just in reviewing your resume or in putting you through multiple interviews. So, start your response off with something like, “Thank you so much for letting me know, and for the opportunity.” Trust me, it goes a long way when it comes to bolstering your reputation.3. Ask for feedback.Rejection hurts, but it can also be an incredibly enlightening learning experience if you’re open to it.After you thank the employer for their time and consideration,  ask if they have any feedback  about how you could improve  moving forward. Let them know that you’re still actively continuing your job search and would value any insights they have about how you could be an even more impressive candidate.Be aware that not everybody will be willing to fulfill this request- some companies actually have policies against it. If you get some helpful feedback in return, that’s great. But, if not, even asking shows that you’re someone who’s not only willing to accept disappointments, but learn and grow from them.4. Resist the ur ge to trash talk that employer. When we think about responding to rejection, we often only think about what happens in the heat of the moment and what we say directly to that employer. However, it’s not just what you say when you’re in earshot that matters.I get that you might want to vent about your disappointment, but  resist the temptation to talk poorly about that employer  or about how they “strung you along.” You never know who in your network is connected or how the things you say might make it back to the wrong person. If and when someone prompts you to find out if you landed that specific job, keep things vague by saying something like, “I didn’t land that role, but it was a great experience as I continue looking for new opportunities.”Here’s the hard truth:  rejection is always going to sting. But, how you react to it will make all of the difference- especially as you continue your job search. Use these four tips to respond to rejection as positively as poss ible, and you’ll move on from that letdown with your reputation (and your professional bridges) intact. This article was originally published on FlexJobs.

9 Reasons Your Resume Gets Rejected

9 Reasons Your Resume Gets Rejected 9 Reasons Your Resume Gets Rejected Even though most job-seekers qualify to perform many different jobs, they still worry about their qualifications when it comes to job openings. Of course they worry, we can’t blame them for that and they will likely continue worrying until they find a new job. However, qualifications are only a small part of the job-search process. Highly qualified job-seekers get rejected every day by recruiters. So why do these qualified candidates get rejected by employers? Here’s a few reasons: The hiring manager changed the spec dramatically from the time it was published (it happens) and now they want someone with 10 years’ experience instead of 5. An entry-level resume screener couldn’t understand the words or their context on the resume or application. The company is using a resume screening software that uses keyword search and it can’t tell who’s qualified and who isn’t. The job applicant is too qualified and the recruiter assumes they’ll ask for too much money so they reject it before asking the critical question, “What is your target salary?” One little tiny bullet point was left out and even though it wasn’t an essential requirement, the job recruiter decided it was and tossed it into the trash. Whether it’s age, education, or some irrelevant factor, the applicant doesn’t fit the profile that the hiring manager has in mind. Even though the job applicant has a highly relevant background and is qualified, their experience is from a different industry and the person screening resumes doesn’t see their relevance. They’ve been out of work for a while so their application is automatically rejected. Even though they’re highly qualified for the job, the hiring manager decides to hire an old college buddy. So, even though you might be qualified for a job opening, there is no guarantee you’ll get the job offer, or even make it in for an interview. So, what can a job-seeker do? We’ll give you some options in our next blog, “How to Get Past the Resume Rejection Pile.” Stay tuned!

Palm Trees Sway Wind Turbine Design

Palm Trees Sway Wind Turbine Design Palm Trees Sway Wind Turbine Design Palm Trees Sway Wind Turbine Design Eric Loth is an aeronautical engineer by training, and by his own admission began looking for something to investigate and work on that was a little different. So he began looking into designs of wind turbines, something that captured his attention as an undergraduate engineering student in the 1970s. The result: Success, in a three-year program to investigate the viability of an ultralight segmented morphing rotor for a 50-MW wind turbine, backed by $3.56-million grant from the U.S. Dept. of Energy. The project promises to advance the technology fivefold; a 50-MW wind turbine does not now exist. Recent advances are only now producing 8-MW and 10-MW machines with a conventional three-blade design. Theres no guarantee this is going to work, notes Loth. It is a longshot. If successful, that longshot could propel wind power to grab a 20% share of U.S. production capacity by 2030, one of the goals outlined in DOEs recently updated Wind Vision Report. Loth, now the chair of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of Virginia, says attaining the goal will require greater development of offshore wind resources that the U.S. is only beginning to exploit. Large, low-cost wind turbines are essential to crack the market but such designs do not exist and have not yet been attempted, he points out. Professor Eric Loth, with a small model of a turbine that folds its blades together like palm fronds in dangerous weather. Image: Tom Cogill / University Of Virginia The problems primarily revolve around extreme blade lengths and overall mass, he says. Rotor blades for a 50-MW machine would approach 200 meters in length and conventional upwind concepts are cost-prohibitive above 10 MW to 15 MW. At about 10 megawatts gravity and weight become so problematic, he says. More mass equals more gravity and it becomes a downward spiral. The possible solutionsegmented rotorswas inspired by the palm tree. Compared to an oak tree, for instance, palms are light with a segmented trunk that flattens almost to 90 degrees, Loth says. They can morph to the wind. Loths team includes experts in wind turbine design and controls from U.S. universities, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, CO, Sandia National Laboratory in Albuqurque. Their design centers on a downwind machine fitted with ultralightweight segmented rotors. During operation and in good weather, they would spread out to catch the wind. During heavy storms or other bad weather, they would fold together like palm fronds and avoid damage. Segmentation theoretically reduces the rotors weight, allowing them to attain lengths the equivalent of two football fields, reducing costs and easing construction. Mass is money so we have to think about lightweight materials. The palm tree is inspirational, says Loth. He believes a prototype can be built using existing materials, such as carbon-fiber composites that are lighter but more expensive than traditional materials. Other alternatives will be investigated over the course of the job, he adds. Hinged turbine blades fold to reduce the load of heavy wind, which means they can be made lighter and longer. At the proposed size, Gravity is a bigger and bigger issue, forcing a design outside of conventional scaling, he says. A more common upwind machine is problematic because upwind rotors need a high stiffness to avoid fatigue. It also presents a possibility of striking the tower during high winds. The high degree of stiffness then leads to increased blade mass as rotors scale up, with the problem of greater gravity loads. The downwind design allows for a segmented blade that could produce a net mass saving of 50% through decreased shell and spar thicknesses, according to a 2012 paper Loth and co-authors published for AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting. The paper also states that a prealignment may allow a more straightforward and efficient segmentation of the blades since shear stresses near joints are substantially reduced. The prealigned geometric curvature can also help alleviate tower wake effects on the blades since blade tips are shifted downstream where the tower wake is weaker. The downwind concept incorporates a vertical plane geometry at below rated speeds and then transitions to a load-aligned downwind deflection between rated speeds and cutout speeds, using coning and curvature to balance gravity, centrifugal and aerodynamic forces. This eliminates downwind cantilever loads ten-fold, and is meant to mimic the structure of the palm tree, according to Loth. Reducing the cantilever loads allows blades to be segmented, reducing fabrication and construction costs. Todd Griffith, the technical lead for Sandias offshore wind program and a team member, says carbon fiber brings huge advantages because of its light weight and stiffness. Key will be figuring out how to use it selectively, because of its higher price, with cheaper materials. He believes the team can build on prior Sandia research with proposed 100-meter-long rotor blades. Thinking outside of the box is key to advancing wind technology, believes Loth, who is an ASME Fellow. Wind energy has established a stable foothold in the mix of electric power sources in the U.S., producing more than 4.5%or about 61,000 MWof the nations electricity in 2015. Advances in turbine and rotor design have helped the renewable technology to become a more reliable generation source for the nations grid. But its application has plateaued over the past two years, due to lack of stability in federal tax credits, low energy demand since 2008 and the low price of natural gas, according to DOE. For wind power to grow, DOE calls for further cost reductions, expanding developable areas and deploying wind in ways that increase economic value, including support for U.S. jobs and manufacturing. DOE believes cost reductions do not depend on disruptive technological breakthroughs but do rely on continued cost improvements, including rotor scale-up, taller towers to access higher wind speeds, overall plant efficiency improvements achieved through advanced controls, improved plant designs enabled by deeper understanding of atmospheric physics, and other items. Loth is betting that a segmented ultralight rotor blade is a first step toward attaining that goal. Learn about the latest energy solutions at ASMEs Power Energy Conference and Exhibition. For Further Discussion Mass is money so we have to think about lightweight materials. The palm tree is inspirational.Eric Loth, Professor, University of Virginia

Teachers, parents want children to meditate in school for mental health

Teachers, parents want children to meditate in school for mental health Teachers, parents want children to meditate in school for mental health A new ClassDojo study of 1,000 U.S families and 900 U.S teachers, analyzed data from a massive mindfulness survey conducted back in March of this year. ClassDojo is a communication platform for teachers, students, and parents. The content intimated in its latest report is derived from over 180 countries, and 95% of pre-K-8 schools in the U.S.Participants were surveyed on their views regarding courses implemented in schools that might help young students better combat stress and anxiety, particularly employing mindfulness exercises as opposed to traditional psychiatric treatment.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! How common are mental health issues among young children?According to the Center For Disease Control And Prevention, 7.1% of children (just about 4 million) between the ages of 3-17 have been diagnosed with anxiety and nearly two million of this same demographic has be en diagnosed with depression. These disorders usually appear in unison, in fact, 78% of children suffering from depression have anxiety as well. The CDC additionally reports a rise in these disorders in the youth: “Ever having been diagnosed with either anxiety or depression” among children aged 6â€"17 years increased from 5.4% in 2003 to 8% in 2007 and to 8.4% in 2011â€"2012. “Ever having been diagnosed with anxiety” increased from 5.5% in 2007 to 6.4% in 2011â€"2012. “Ever having been diagnosed with depression” did not change between 2007 (4.7%) and 2011-2012 (4.9%.)” The findings in the March edition of the ClassDojo’s report echo the trend indexed just above. 3 clear signs that youre ready for a managerial role

3 clear signs that you're ready for a managerial role 3 clear signs that you're ready for a managerial role People are often promoted into managerial positions because they’re extremely good at the technical job they initially held. It’s a natural progression- you’re good at doing a specific job, so you’ll probably be good at managing other people who do it. But technical competence isn’t perfectly correlated with managerial competence. Many people accept the transition to a manager as a default- they simply feel like it’s time. Or they feel as though they’ve reached the top of the technical ladder, so they want to jump to a new ladder and start climbing again.I don’t think either of those options is a particularly good reason for becoming a manager. If you’re given the opportunity to transition from an individual contributor role to a managerial position, I’d advise you to think carefully about why you’re making the move. There’s nothing wrong with staying in your current role if you don’t have any reasons to become a manager. To help you avoid being unsure of yourse lf when offered a managerial position, I want to share my perspective on when to take the leap. Here are three ways to tell if you’re ready:1. You have a vision of what you can accomplish for the company as a leaderIdeally, you should have an internal motivation to become a manager. This motivation usually comes in the form of a vision for your team or an urge to improve a process within the company. It can be helpful to take a moment to think about what occupies your thoughts while at work. If you regularly find yourself thinking, “There’s a better way to do this,” then you may be mentally ready for a managerial position. The key is that you have some sort of larger vision. It could be about improving your team or the company goals- and it doesn’t have to be perfectly clear right at this moment. But you need to have a feeling that what you’re trying to accomplish is larger than the requirements of your individual role.If you really feel like you can offer the company more a s a manager, that’s a sign you’re ready for the transition.2. You’re willing to develop a broader set of skillsEveryone who transitions into a managerial role has the same initial fantasy: “I’ll be able to stay up-to-date with all the technical aspects of my last role.”Unfortunately, that’s not realistic. Managers don’t have time to stay as technical as individual contributors. And eventually, you’ll actually become less skilled in whatever it was you were doing. The good news is, this regression doesn’t make you less effective.Instead of constantly learning about every new development in your field, you’re learning new disciplines and gaining a broader base knowledge. You’re becoming effective in a different way.The reality is, some people don’t want to do that. It’s okay to be committed to your specific discipline and decide you want to concentrate on it exclusively. But if you’re ready to gain a broader set of skills- to build a wide base of knowledge instead of a deep understanding- then the time may be right to become a manager.3. You can’t realize your ambitions aloneBefore I took my current role as CEO of Morphic Therapeutic, I spent a lot of time on self-reflection. I was trying to uncover my passion and decide what my next step would be.I came to realize that I really wanted to help build a scientific culture. I had a particular workplace in mind, and I wanted to see it come to fruition. I knew the only way I’d be able to have a hand in building that was by working at a company that was starting from scratch. No ingrained habits, no established culture to fight. A blank slate.I also knew the only way I could realize my vision was through leading and managing other people. I couldn’t do it as a single contributor within the company. I needed the help of an entire team to make it happen. And I think that’s really what a managerial leadership role is about: executing on an idea you can’t accomplish by yourself. You do n’t necessarily need to know where it’s going, but you must have ambition. There’s no reason to become a manager without some kind of aim to accomplish a goal that’s bigger than your own abilities. If you have the sense that you’re working towards something more important than your individual contribution, then you’re likely ready for the transition to a managerial role. This article originally appeared on Quora.
